A FUNctional approach is progressive development of the neuromuscular system to produce more force whilst increasing stability. You’ll constantly be challenged with an emphasis on greater range of movement resulting in increased neural stimulation. Not only is this a more exciting way to train it also elicits longer-term developments.
What is FUNctional training?
Functional strength training is essentially a movement based continuum. As humans we perform a combination of movements in the three cardinal planes: sagital, frontal and transverse. Functional training is moving throughout all three planes. The emphasis is on a transfer of improvements in strength achieved from one movement to enhancing the performance of another movement. It does this by affecting the entire neuromuscular system.
Why FUNctional Training?
Your posture reflects your skeletal alignment and muscle balance. Upon consultation many common postural complaints (lower back, neck and shoulder sound familier?) are usually due to work environments and poor postural habits.
By conditioning in a functional manner you will improve your muscular strength, balance flexibility and neurological function. This in turn will be reflected in how you begin to move, and how you become more aware of your posture. You will shed unwanted bodyfat (and weight!) and many of the unwanted aches and pains in your body.
Ultimately, its better to train muscles working sequentially through movement as this is governed by our brain, NOT our muscles.
Some benefits of FUNctional training:
A final point about functional training: It should also be functional to you to what you want! For example a triathlete will train vastly different to a bodybuilder or at least they should!
